Robert Redford to Lead S.H.I.E.L.D. in Captain America: The Winter Solider

Following speculation that Robert Redford would be joining the cast of the Captain America sequel Captain America: The Winter Solider (which began filming this week and is due out April 4, 2014), further details confirming the news have established that Redford will be playing Nick Fury’s superior in the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, while Samuel Jackson will continue to play Nick Fury. This alleviates the initial fear I had from headlines which led me to worry that Redford would be replacing Samuel Jackson, who it turns out remains in the cast. Some are speculating that Redford’s character will be the original World War II version of Nick Fury while Jackson’s will be the contemporary version. I’m not sure how that would work, but in any case, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. There may have to be an issue of What If? that dares the question, “What if Robert Redford, Samuel Jackson, and David Hasselhoff Battled for the Right to Play Nick Fury?” I’m pretty sure Samuel Jackson wins that one–even KITT can’t beat the power of the Force–but it’d be fun to watch Hasselhoff battle Redford for the runner-up.
